HT 6 April 2014: Malmi Airport to be closed down in 2016

Malmi Airport, used by light aircraft , will be closed down in 2016 to make way for new houses. According to information received by Helsingin Sanomat, the decision was made in the framework budget talks last week. The City of Helsinki designs for the area have ballooned, with the latest plans containing new housing for 20,000 to 30,000 people.  Read the article.

Note: to be taken with a grain of salt. No source is given for the reported unrealistic schedule. No preparation documents for the decision have been produced by the ministries despite repeated document requests. Nevertheless, the decision to close down Malmi Airport “at the latest by 2020” has been recorded in the Finnish government’s budgetary framework and general fiscal plan.
