  • Municipal initiative 6466 on organizing an advisory referendum on Malmi Airport

Opened in December 2018, municipal initiative 6466 on holding an advisory referendum about keeping Helsinki-Malmi Airport in aviation use collected more than 31,000 signatures and was delivered to the City of Helsinki on August 2, 2021.

All residents of Helsinki over the age of 15 could participate in the initiative. The referendum would simply have asked whether Malmi should be kept in aviation use or not. The municipal initiative did not in itself take a position on Malmi’s behalf, but sought to hear an objective citizens’ opinion.

The City Council has repeatedly rejected proposals for direct consultation of citizens in the matter. The municipal initiative 6466, which in the end garnered by far the most support of all Finnish municipal initiatives, was also rejected at the Council meeting on December 8, 2021.
